As if there weren't enough things to worry about.
Now one of those self-righteous "watchdog" groups is lobbying to get a law passed to require WARNING labels on sugary and caffienated sodas warning that they can make you fat/increase your blood pressure!
HOLY SHIT! What the...
GRAAAAAAH!!!
GODDAMMIT! Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Whatever hapened to people taking care of themselves and getting educated about things?
OF COURSE high-calorie non-nutritive beverages can make you fat. They're a concentrated source of calories, and have little to no nutritive value. If you consume more calories than you burn, you gain weight. OF COURSE caffiene increases your blood pressure. It's a fucking stimulant! Like Cocaine... Only not nearly that strong, and you know, not ILLEGAL.
Do they not teach these things in schools anymore, or are they so busy "teaching to the test" that anything not on the SATs, ACTs, or the other standardized exams they need you to parrot back the facts of...
Why do people insist that they need to be parented by the government in order to be prevented from doing things that are "bad" for them? Whatever happened to willpower and common sense?!?!?
What are they going to insist on next? Requiring by law that you hold hands when you cross the street?
If it weren't for those lazy fatasses that filed lawsuits insisting that "McDonald's made me FAAAAAAT!!!" because they failed to think for themselves and NOT succumb to the marketer's "seductive" message... ARGH!
Adults should fucking act like adults. That means taking responsibility for your own actions, and also taking responsibility for the actions of any children in your charge, as they're not old enough to have the common sense and life experience you have.
I don't like to deal with the sometimes unpleasant consequences of my actions. Nobody does. But you know what? I ADMIT it's my fault I fucked up and I try to work around it. Suprize suprize it actually WORKS when I stop whinig, look at things objectively, come up with a plan and execute it.
When the hell did people stop being able to think for themselves?
Think I'm kidding about the lobbying? I'm not...

I say we require warning labels on 'activist groups' stating that participating in such things can lead to increased consumer costs and higher taxes.
Or how about a warning label on warning labels? "Warning reading this label could cause insult to your intelegence. If you feel this label has unduely insulted your intelegence please contact your nearest 'watchdog' group member with a brick."
I mean honestly, if they think that people need to know that drinking soda makes you fat, well they can just go out there and actually EDUCATE people themselves. But nooo too dam lazy to do any real work, its much easer to sit around and whine that someone else should do it for them.
As if such a label would change one god dammed thing. Show me someone who actually was affected by such a warning label and I'll show you someone too stupid to be allowed to breed. Its not like there isn't already that info on a can of soda anyway. If it says its got 46g of sugars in the can its not rocket science to figure out what happens if you drink a case a day.
Maybe they should stick a warning on TV sets, "Danger prolonged periods of watching could lead to obisity." Or how about on couches, "Danger sitting in this for prolonged periods of time could cause you to look like a spud." Or even better, lets stick a warning label on desk jobs. "Warning sitting down all day to work could cause you to gain weight."
Bunch of bloody stupid moronic sheep.

And it's not even THAT hard! They put the calorie count on the can!
*lightbulb*
OMG! Do you think people can't to arithmetic in their heads anymore, or even READ numbers?
But if they can't read numbers, they can't read the warning labels either...

"Think you stupid, pathetic sheep!"
Now, mind you, the residents of that particular house probably needed those words less than most, but they were also the ones most likely to get something out of it.
As for the warning labels, I'm sorry, but it hasn't done all that much for cigarettes. Honestly, if it should have done ANYTHING (for smokes or for Porko Cola), it should INCREASE personal responsibility. I mean, hell, I drink a fair amount of Cola *AND* smoke, but I fully acknowledge the fact that if I'm overweight and have a nasty cough, it's nobody's fault but mine on either count. However, that hasn't stopped multiple government entities from suing the tobacco firms, and I doubt it's going to stop obesity lawsuits, either.
Sometimes, I just really hate people.

But frankly, believe it or not, a LOT of people have no idea drinking a lot of soda can make them fat. It's not "food" so they don't even bother considering it a source of calories. It's just something you consume when you're thirsty and it tastes better than water. Stupid, I know, but people just don't think.
Case in point...I was watching a show on TV where several overweight kids went on a public diet together. The show monitored their progress. And they made a big point of saying how many calories soda has, and one of the kids said he never realized this before.

In the learn something new every day dept: I was just going throug some of the empty cans I have on my desk and noticed that Fresca has 0 calories listed. Might have to start drinking more of that instead of some of these others.

B) Ever for a kid, that's pretty freakin' stupid. I know I'm going to sound like an old man here, but even as a kid, I didn't need Ronald McDonald to point up good eating habits for me, and I sure as hell didn't need Cookie monster to tell me "cookies are a sometimes food."

But the benefits are usually most effective when caffiene is taken in MODERATION.
Which seems to be a foreign concept with today's (sadly common) "more More MORE!!" attitude...

Yeah, I know your not joking, because the bloody thing was all over the news last night while I was at dinner. Ye gods, man. You know my stance on personal responsibility, and... yeah. This just sickens me. And, let's face facts, if people don't bother to read nutritional labels now, they aren't going to pay attention to warning labels, either.
And, as an itelligent, entlightened, and educated person who both A) smokes (warning labels already in place!), And B) drinks plenty of caffinated, sugary DEATH-INNA-CAN, I'm honestly insulted. Thank you, I'm quite aware of WHAT'S IN THE CAN, and WHAT THAT MEANS, and HOW IT AFFECTS ME. I really appreciate you'all'uns belaboring the obvious, but... just no.

Ok now I'd love to see that. A pure black can with skull and crossbones on it and more sugar and caffine than in my average cup of coffee.

Subway. I love the Chicken Teriyaki sandwich; that's it's marginally fresh and customizable, and I don't drink carbonated drinks, so it's a bottle of water and cookies for the combo.
... those cookies? One single cookie is something like four sandwiches of fat. Nasty feeling, that. Because there's more of an expectation at Subway for Health, I'd have liked that info a bit more out in the open - though not to the degree the above activist groups do.
Just something to think about.
July 14 2005, 17:37:59 UTC 6 years ago
"Soft" cookies (like the ones at Subway, and my rainbow cookies.) are pretty much fat and sugar with a little bit of flour to hold it together. Maybe some chocolate chips or nuts.
I do think that calorie and ingreditent information should be easier to find, though. Not just because of dietary reasons, but because of allergies. I get a mild rash if I eat malt. A friend of mine could stop breathing if he eats nuts, and he's got only a moderate allergy.
*sigh* I hate militants who think they have to pass laws to get people to not be self-destructive. If people are too stupid to think, Darwin should come get them, you know?
Get teh stupid out of the gene-pool!
